Coaley village hall lies at the heart of the village and provides the only communal space for local people. It offers a venue for a wide range of social and recreational activities and provides for all sections of the local community. The village hall is a registered charity run by a voluntary management committee.
Coaley village hall acts as a focus for activities for all sections of the community with regular bookings for local clubs, private functions and key annual events.
Why do we need a development Project?
The village hall building is 56 years old and while it has served us well is in need of updating. The most urgent area is the roof, which suffers from periodic leaks (needing frequent running repairs) and has poor insulation qualities.
In addition the community shop is situated next to the village hall and housed in a pre-fabricated building on land owned by the village hall. The shop is a thriving local enterprise, run entirely by volunteers. However, the premises have a limited lifespan and further development is limited. Improved premises would help to ensure the continuing sustainability of the shop.
The aspiration of local people to improve and develop the village hall is clearly identified in the Parish Plan published in November 2005 and was verified by consultation in April 2011.
The development project aims to refurbish and extend the existing village hall building and integrate the community shop within it. It will also significantly improve facilities for a range of leisure, cultural and sporting activities within the hall as well as extending opportunities for meetings and training provision.
The project can be broken down into self contained elements and implemented as funding becomes available.
Phase 1, the replacement of the roof and main hall ceiling, with associated work including extending the pitched roof over the Annex (currently a flat roof), new lighting and a fire alarm system is now completed. This has given us a weatherproof structure with better insulation ready for the winter.
Phase 2, the installation of a new heating and ventilation system was completed in summer 2013, providing a much nicer internal environment and protecting the building from condensation and damp
Phase 3, the refurbishment of the kitchen was carried out giving us new and improved catering facilities
Phase 3 continued; a new Bar room was created next to the kitchen and the toilet factilities were refurbished.
Approximately £70,000 was raised to carry out Phases 1-3 .
We continue fund raising for the next Phases
Future phases will see upgrades and refurbishments to the changing rooms and toilet facilities and drainage. In the long term we will hope to look at providing accommodation for the community shop and improving other facilities for Hall users.
